THE MOST EASTERN POINT OF THE CONTINENT... WHY AGAIN???

Well, November 13th marked my own personal history: I reached the most Eastern point of the continent CAPE SPEAR, NEWFOUNDLAND!!!!

Here's how it went....

We're coming up a windy barren road. Quiet, a bit hungover, the Jeep smells like wet dog. Nick, my new best friend, and Winnie, man's best friend, are next to me, waiting to share the histotic moment. Suddenly there it is, Cape Spear, one of the four points I'm going to reach on the expedition.I feel happy, overwhelmed, and wondering... why am I doing this again????

The question has been asked to me a great deal over the last year, and I could never really provide a concrete answer. Why are you spending so much money? Why are you putting yourself in potential danger? Why drive for so long? I always answered vaguely, not really knowing why I was doing this.

A few months ago, in a drinking session at Lake Placid with Dominique (still wonder how he got so drunk on so little amount of beer), he tried to list a top ten reasons why I was doing this. I didn't give it much attention then, preferring to laugh at Do tip toeing and dancing his way back to the motel Edeilwess (highly recommended for a tacky 1970 feel).

But suddenly, there, sitting at the edge of the continent, it hit me...

WHY: To meet people like Donald, Nick, Sebastien, who didn't know me but welcomed me with arms open. Nick even sacraficing himsefl on a two day drinkfest to assure I would have a great time in St John's.

WHY: For places lke Newfoundland, where scenery just awes you at every corner. Where in any pub you're a local in a matter of minutes, where everywhere you're greeted with a smile.

WHY: for discovering new things like couchsurfing, where strangers welcome you in their own houses, like today with Stephanie would treated me to a great mini-pub-crawl in Portland.

WHY: To feel that freedom that you don't know where you'll be tomorrow, who you'll meet, and to know that no matter what, I won't be working 9 to 5 in the next few months.

WHY: To feel different, to be out of the mold, to challenge myself, to say I DID IT, to discover, to matter, to make a difference, to not waste my life... Dominique found those ones I must admit.

So that's it I guess, that's why I'm doing this and I'm sure in the next weeks I will find more reasons!!!

Cheers

GO EAST!!!!!!

Well after much preparation, delaying, and talking, i'm finally off!!!!!!!!!

Thousands of kilometers in front of me, many new adventures, new friends, new places to discover... and the first one is the East Coast of Canada, from Ottawa to Cape Spear, Newfoundland.

The first stops were the usual: Montreal to visit Mike, Annie and the wonderful Scarlet! Frechette made a quick visit (he had trouble putting his pants on, that's why he was late... don't ask!!), Mike had to call in sick the next day... he's a lightweight. Then Trois-Riviere to visit Ben and Sabi who cooked me the best meals for 2 days. Ben also had to call in sick the next day... I can see a pattern here!! Finally ended up in Quebec City where Cote was afraid of debauchery... debauchery that we managed to tame, not before seeing the Ex Big Man swet in front of Satan's home brew and a shooter!!

After a brief visit of Moncton AND THE AMAZEMENT THAT MAGNECTIC HILL IS (I put that in capital letter to emphasise sarcasm here) I met up with Donald, Google's friend, who treated me to a meal and the great Maratime hospitality!

Am now waiting for the Ferry in north Sydney, where in less than 1 hour I managed to get a free haircut and the use of Internet, thanks to the lovely Ellen Hiscock, who entertained me with a few Cape Breton stories, and the amazing lady at the public library, who I feel I've known for ages... guess this is what the east coast his: relax and friendly!!

Next stop Newfoundland... keep posted and send the news!!!!span class=”fullpost”>
